Why do hens peck each other? Is this normal? Feat Why do hens peck each other? Is this normal? Feather pecking is a serious issue in poorly planned or poorly managed systems. The biggest challenge is detecting its onset and identifying the main cause. It is almost always related to environmental stress such as unbalanced nutrition, overcrowding, competition for resources, lack of stimulation, absence of perches or improper lighting. The solution is not beak trimming. The Certified Humane® program allows light beak tipping while prohibiting severe beak trimming and promotes welfare-based solutions such as providing adequate space, environmental enrichment, access to natural light and proper stocking density. When the environment respects animals’ physiological and behavioral needs, these problems are naturally minimized. For more detailed information on each practice or requirement, consult the technical standards available on the Certified Humane® website: https://download.certifiedhumaneasia.org/egg-laying-hens #AnimalWelfare #CertifiedHumane #english
Outdoor access can be part of certain production s Outdoor access can be part of certain production systems for laying hens and broiler chickens, but it is not a universal requirement. What is essential is that birds are raised in environments that allow them to express natural behaviors such as walking, scratching, dustbathing, and exploring. When outdoor areas are provided, proper management is important to maintain dry, stable ground conditions and reduce health risks. Certified Humane®️ standards focus on ensuring housing systems, whether indoor or with outdoor access, are designed to promote welfare, health, and behavioral expression. 🔗 Learn more: https://certifiedhumaneasia.org/ Repost: @farmmade_foods #certifiedhumane #animalwelfare #english
Is diarrhea in calves normal? When is it a warning Is diarrhea in calves normal? When is it a warning sign? This is one of the most common issues on farms. Diarrhea may be caused by inadequate colostrum intake, poor management or viral, bacterial or parasitic infections. However, it is not normal and should never be ignored. Immediate assessment of hydration, provision of oral electrolytes, ensuring warmth and seeking veterinary guidance are essential to prevent more severe losses. In welfare-based systems, daily monitoring of clinical signs and rapid response are standard practices. Do supermarket eggs really come from well-cared-fo Do supermarket eggs really come from well-cared-for hens? Not always. Labels such as “free-range” or “cage-free” do not necessarily guarantee good welfare conditions. Many products do not follow rigorous animal welfare protocols. One reliable way to be sure is to look for the Certified Humane® seal on the packaging or label. It ensures that hens were raised with adequate space, freedom, proper nutrition, respectful handling and without unnecessary suffering. Conscious consumption starts with information. Is removing cages enough? Although it represents Is removing cages enough? Although it represents an important step forward, simply freeing hens from cages does not solve everything. Production systems must provide adequate space, balanced nutrition, thermal comfort, shelter, clean water and opportunities for birds to express natural behaviors. The Certified Humane® program monitors dozens of criteria, including nutritional requirements, housing and stocking density, air quality, temperature, sanitary measures, routine management practices and staff training. It is a comprehensive approach that goes far beyond the idea of “free-range”. Animal welfare is a set of preventive measures designed to avoid challenges that compromise animals and production. Have you ever seen a hen dust bathing or perched i Have you ever seen a hen dust bathing or perched in the afternoon? These behaviors are part of a chicken’s natural life. Environmental enrichment consists of actions and structures that allow animals to express natural behaviors. This includes providing perches, sand areas for dust bathing, objects for pecking and scratching, and varied environmental stimuli. In the Certified Humane® protocol, enrichment is not optional but a requirement. More stimulating environments reduce stress, prevent undesirable behaviors and improve both physical and mental welfare. For more detailed information on each practice or requirement, consult the technical standards available on the Certified Humane® website: https://download.certifiedhumaneasia.org/egg-laying-hens #AnimalWelfare #EthicalPoultry #CertifiedHumane #CageFreeHens #english
Have you ever thought about the surface chickens l Have you ever thought about the surface chickens live on every day? The quality of poultry litter, which covers dirt or concrete floors in poultry houses, directly impacts bird welfare. Litter is the material such as wood shavings or rice hulls spread over the floor and must always be dry, loose and clean. Wet or compacted litter favors bacterial growth, causes footpad lesions, increases ammonia emissions and creates an unhealthy environment. It also prevents dust bathing, a highly motivated behavior that provides comfort for hens. According to Certified Humane® criteria, wet, hard or contaminated litter areas must be replaced whenever necessary. Proper litter management prevents injuries and disease while improving air quality and thermal comfort. For more detailed information on each practice or requirement, consult the technical standards available on the Certified Humane® website: https://download.certifiedhumaneasia.org/egg-laying-hens #AnimalWelfare #ProperEnvironment #CertifiedHumane #english
Yes. According to Certified Humane® standards, th Yes. According to Certified Humane® standards, the ideal ratio is one manual nest for a maximum of five hens. This means that for 100 birds, at least 25 well-distributed nests should be provided in quiet, easily accessible areas of the house. Nests should be elevated off the litter to prevent hens from hiding underneath them. Automatic nesting systems are another option and are increasingly used in commercial cage-free egg production. When nests are limited, hens become agitated, some lay eggs in inappropriate locations and the risk of cracked eggs increases. This also compromises natural behavior, as hens prefer secluded areas for laying.
