International Training Center Cage-Free Innovation and Welfare Hub (Fapet Egg)

The model farm of the Faculty of Animal Science at Gadjah Mada University, in Yogyakarta, is a pioneer in the study and practice of cage-free chicken farming in Indonesia.

International Training Center Cage-Free Innovation and Welfare Hub (Fapet Egg)

As an educational institution, UGM’s journey towards establishing a cage-free farm was a collaborative effort in partnership with Global Food Partners and other consortium members.

As such, the farm has become a reference point as one of the pioneers in promoting research and implementing best practices for poultry farming.

The business strategy to maintain animal welfare and the company’s sustainability involves the continuous management and care of laying hens, which is crucial to ensuring efficiency, productivity, and a consistent supply of high-quality eggs for the farm’s target audience and its customers.

All egg production from the company is certified with the Certified Humane® animal welfare seal. The products represent 100% of the farm’s egg product line. The eggs are primarily distributed to meet the needs of the university’s faculty, and some product lines are available for purchase at the university’s minimarket and through local community resellers.

Education, Practical Training, and Promotion of Animal Welfare

The International Training Center Cage-Free Innovation and Welfare Hub was created from the shared vision between members of Gadjah Mada University and a consortium of partners led by Global Food Partners, with the goal of integrating education, practical training, and the promotion of animal welfare.

The aim was to create a model farm that would serve as a training center for the Faculty of Animal Science, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing animal welfare in the livestock industry. Today, the farm welcomes producers from various Southeast Asian countries interested in cage-free egg production.

The project’s implementation involved strategic planning, collaboration with partners who share our values, and a commitment to creating a sustainable and ethical model for egg production.

Investment in Certification

The farm operates through the cage-free management of laying hens, with a capacity for 2,600 birds, managed by a team of dedicated workers. In the previous period, the peak daily production reaches an average productivity rate of 93%, maintaining a production rate of 92%.

According to Professor Budi Guntoro, the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM who is responsible for Fapet Egg, the decision to pursue animal welfare certification aligns with the commitment and challenge of running a cage-free farm that prioritizes animal welfare.

“We learned about the Certified Humane® program through one of our partners, Global Food Partners, and explored information on the program’s official website.

This certification is a comprehensive reflection of our dedication to ethical practices throughout our egg production process,” stated Professor Budi Guntoro.

Operations Adjusted to HFAC Standards

Although meeting the Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) animal welfare standards was considered feasible, and cage-free farming operations were inherently aligned with the philosophy of the Faculty of Animal Science, Professor Budi Guntoro noted that one challenge faced by Fapet Egg was the limited availability of birds suited for the cage-free system.

Additionally, the operations were not initially set up to raise day-old chicks (DOC), which posed a logistical challenge, restricting the ability to source birds that met HFAC standards.

According to Professor Budi Guntoro, overcoming this challenge required strategic collaboration and developing a supply chain that supported the availability of hens suited to the cage-free system in the region.

The journey also included adapting to industry standards and meeting the specific needs of the local context.

This process of aligning with the quality standards required by the Certified Humane® program reflected a commitment to ensuring that all products meet the program’s requirements.

Certification Impact Led to Farm Improvements

Since implementing the requirements of the Certified Humane® program, a notable shift in Fapet Egg’s poultry management practices has resulted in improved ability to meet the calcium needs of aging laying hens.

The emphasis on the nutritional factors guided by the animal welfare program had a positive impact on the quality of our eggshells, as reflected in customer feedback highlighting improvements in the sensory aspects of the products.

“The work of Certified Humane® has served as a valuable resource, providing us with guidelines that not only validate our practices but also contribute to the broader goal of improving our poultry farming.

We appreciate and value the significant role Certified Humane® plays in advancing animal welfare practices in the industry,” concluded the professor.
