Bengtak Poultry Sdn Bhd
Bengtak Poultry Sdn Bhd, located in Batu Pahat, Malaysia, is a mid-sized poultry company which stands out for its commitment to animal welfare and the quality of its products. Founded in 2002 by Sim Zhi Zhan, the company began its operations in the chicken trade, buying from farms to sell to the market.
However, over the years, the company realized the importance of guaranteeing quality from the moment the birds are raised and so began building its own farms in 2009. Since then, Bengtak Poultry has been expanding its operation to become a benchmark in the Malaysian poultry sector.
Currently, Bengtak Poultry produces approximately one million chickens a month, with a team of around 100 employees on the farms and 15 in administration. With annual revenues of approximately 150 million Malaysian ringgits, the company has established itself as an important player in the region’s poultry market.
Motivated by the search for premium markets in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, Bengtak Poultry decided to obtain the Certified Humane® animal welfare certification. The company believes that the quality of chickens improves significantly when humane practices are applied.
Currently, two of Bengtak’s farms are in the process of being certified, which represents around 5% of its total production. The company plans to expand this certification to the rest of its operations when it is ready to implement the necessary changes.
The main challenge faced by Bengtak Poultry in adapting to the Certified Humane® standards was the use of wood sheds instead of plastic sheds for raising chickens, as well as modifying the transport trucks to meet the certification requirements. Despite these challenges, the company has seen a significant improvement in animal handling and farm management by following the guidelines of the certification program.
Bengtak Poultry’s products are intended to be sold on the Singaporean market, where local slaughterhouses distribute chicken to customers including hotels and high-end restaurants. The company’s animal welfare strategy includes concern for the quality of feed and water provided to the birds, as well as careful education of employees about humane treatment during the rearing period. Veterinarians and managers regularly visit the farms to ensure that all procedures are followed and that the birds are healthy and treated with dignity.
